In an effort to loosen up my paintings, and create less waste, I’ve been making larger exploratory works and then cropping them into finished compositions. It has the freedom of sketching, I stop worrying about wasting materials or wasting time and just make marks.
By moving the empty stretcher around the work I can get a better feel for the options. The most interesting thing to me is how many paintings can be in one painting and what a completely different emotional response by just moving the stretcher a few inches up and over. One section is movement and almost anxious, another is the tranquil blue.
The third photo is where I landed, a combination of movement and stillness.
